Manhattan Beach, California is home to some of the top public schools in the United States. There are five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school in the City of Manhattan Beach, all of which continually score in the top 1% in both the state and the nation. The Manhattan Beach Unified School District has been ranked among the top three in the State. Forbes Magazine has identified our schools as among “The Best Schools for your Real Estate Buck” on a national scale. The Manhattan Beach Unified School District has also been cited in US News and World Report with a Gold rating awarded to Mira Costa High School. MBUSD is an Apple Distinguished School District with robust wireless Internet, standards for classroom tech for teachers, and a 1:1 device program in grades 3-8.
Manhattan Beach schools have preserved important music, drama, and arts programs as well as developed competitive STEM courses and athletics programs. Grades of Green and Growing Great are two national school programs that had their start here in Manhattan Beach.
Because of the high demand for Manhattan Beach schools, it is important to verify with the district based on residence address that there is room at the zoned school for students to enroll and attend. It is not uncommon for students to be zoned for one school but attend another due to space limitations. See homes for sale in Manhattan Beach >>
Parent involvement paired with the outstanding support and contributions raised by the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation plays a key role in the success of our local education system. The MBEF is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the quality of education here in our schools in Manhattan Beach. The program raises millions of dollars annually to secure teaching positions and extracurricular programs that are essential to developing the whole child. Without the MBEF and the parents who support it, our schools would not flourish as they do today.
Additionally, all booster clubs work in conjunction through the MBX Foundation, which provides support to the extracurricular programs in the otherwise under-funded arts and athletics. MBX also assists the MBUSD by supporting after school and summer school programs.
There are five elementary schools in our district, and five consistently identified real estate “zones” or sections in the City of Manhattan Beach. The Sand Section, The Tree Section, The Hill Section, East Manhattan Beach and The Manhattan Village. School boundaries do not simply follow the real estate sections, so it is important to familiarize yourself with where the cut-offs lie. All students attend Manhattan Beach Middle School for grades six through eight, and then move on for grades nine through twelve at award-winning Mira Costa High School.
(Hermosa Beach students have the choice of attending Mira Costa High School or Redondo Union High School, so there is an additional intake of students at the high school level.)
