For this week’s post in our Pinking Up The Town campaign, we’re going to be looking at a few different organizations (both local and national) that are extremely active in their fight against breast cancer. Whether it’s by raising money, educating others, or providing support, these are groups dedicated to helping others.

Based right here in the South Bay, the Cancer Support Community has been active for nearly a decade in offering programs for cancer patients and their loved-ones. Their organization actively fights against the disease in a number of ways, and this includes their education resources and a support helpline. The helpline is open to anyone, whether they were diagnosed with cancer themselves, are a longtime survivor, or are actively caring for someone close to them. The main mission is to provide support for as many people as possible as they deal with the physical and emotional toll of cancer.

Another organization that started in the South Bay, Chemocessories helps women undergoing cancer treatment remain as positive as possible. The idea is that any gesture, no matter the size, can be a force for good. The team here creates personalized sets of accessories like jewelry, scarves, and turbans. They’re made in an effort to remind every woman that cancer treatment and the subsequent side effects can’t diminish their beauty. The various members are actively involved in the community, provide tips for chemocessorizing, offer support groups, and more!

In 1991, Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) was founded by a group of women in Philadelphia who recognized that there was a lack of information out there for survivors of breast cancer. Over the last 25 years, they have become one of the most prominent resources for those impacted by the disease. They have a number of specialized programs for different demographics, including younger women, men, African-Americans, and the LGBT community to help reach out to as many people as possible. Because of the size they achieved over time, they have a number of ways for people to give back and help, including attending events, conferences, and volunteering remotely.

A nonprofit organziation, is extremely relevent when it comes to having the most dependable and up-to-date information regarding breast cancer. There amount of available information is quite astonishing, and everything that gets posted on the website and in any printed materials is reviewed by the organization’s Professional Advisory Board. This is a group of over 70 practicing medical professionals from around the world who are considered experts in their fields. This vetting process ensures that every bit of info regarding breast cancer is accurate and helpful to those seeking it.

There are countless other organizations, both in the South Bay and worldwide that all unite behind the cause of eventually curing breast cancer. Until that is a reality, they will continue to be advocates for those impacted by the disease, and provide support, funding, and education.
